We picked up 5 Barred Rock and 2 Production Red pullets this morning. They should begin laying in 4 to 5 weeks. There is a farmer who raises hundreds of them. They are beautiful! He would have had at least 300 ready to sell and just got in 600 chicks. These are brown egg layers. The Red Leghorn we got from Alex showed that she was the Queen as soon as we put them in the coop. She started to immediately let them know who was at the top of the pecking order! Stan did research on this and the 'Queen' has very important responsibilities for protecting the flock. They take on a lot more responsibility than the other hens. I didn't know this. She will have her position until a Rooster is put in, then he immediately becomes the dominant individual. I think the Barred Rock are so pretty!
